Ben Stokes refuses to accept the Man of the Match award when England beat South Africa

England star Ben Stokes refused to accept his man of the match award following the win over South Africa, instead believing Dominic Sibley should have been given the honour. Stokes was England’s hero on the final two days, scoring a quickfire 72 before taking the final three wickets as England won a nail-biter.

Stokes also took six catches during the match as well as scoring 47 in the first innings.

But the World Cup winner thought Sibley, who scored his maiden century, should have been handed the award.

At the post-match presentation, where Stokes was named man of the match, the all-rounder said: “I thought Dom put all the hard yards in. He should be the one up here. He’s the man of the match, full credit to him.

“We have three members of the group who are 21. The future looks great for us. We showed an outstanding amount of character.
“It’s why five-day cricket should always be around. It’s the best form of the game.”

And England captain Joe Root also praised Stokes for his performance.

Root said: ”You can put him in any situation and he will stand up for you.

“He plays 100 per cent for the team and is a brilliant role model for all of the guys coming through.

“He puts in an eight- or nine-over spell like that and keeps running and can change game with bat. He is a world-class player.”
